Bali

The Bali most people know is only the beginning. Beyond the terraced hills of Ubud and the cliff temples of Uluwatu lies a quieter, older island, one shaped by the Bali Aga, the original inhabitants who predate Hindu influence and still maintain their own ceremonies, calendars, and codes in villages like Tenganan and Trunyan.

East of Ubud, Karangasem holds what the rest of Bali has largely surrendered: the water palace of Tirta Gangga, where spring-fed pools and stone carvings reflect a royal aesthetic entirely removed from the modern world; the mother temple of Pura Besakih, rising in tiers up the slopes of Gunung Agung, the most sacred site in Balinese Hinduism; and the sheltered arc of Virgin Beach, where the water runs clear and the crowds have not arrived. Further south, Sidemen moves at a pace the rest of the island long forgot, a valley of rice terraces, traditional weaving communities, and intimate retreats with views across to Agung that stop conversation entirely.

Here, every layer of discovery pulls you further from the familiar and closer to something that actually stays with you.

Best time to visit March – October

dry season across the island; clearest skies July–August
