Flores & Komodo

Flores reveals itself slowly, the road east from Labuan Bajo winding through landscapes that shift from tropical coast to volcanic highland with almost theatrical abruptness. Kelimutu's three crater lakes each hold a different colour, each changing over time in ways science can explain but the eye refuses to believe.

The Ngada villages of Bajawa hold megalithic traditions largely untouched; Ruteng's spider-web rice fields are worked by hand the way they always have been. Labuan Bajo rewards a night or two before the boats depart for Komodo, where the dragons are real and so is everything else.

The national park delivers concentrated drama beyond even its most famous inhabitants: Padar Island's three-bay panorama, Pink Beach, and reef systems in water so clear that depth becomes difficult to judge. Beneath the surface, strong currents that make diving technically demanding also make it biologically extraordinary — manta rays, sharks, and coral shaped by the convergence of two oceans.

Best time to visit  April – November  for Flores highlands; seas calm for Komodo crossings April – December, with manta rays most reliably sighted March – May and October – November
